This life is hard
At least once a week someone tells me "I could never volunteer. I'd want to take them all home." That was true for me at the beginning. Now, I tell people "If everyone took home just one, then the shelter would be empty." That makes sense to them. The problem is, sometimes people take home the wrong one. And then the dog pays the price. My beloved Mellie was returned today for biting the adopter. I'm certain this is the end of the line for her. Mellie has issues. My feeling is she came from a drug -filled environment. Something inside of her is broken, and I haven't been able to fix it. I have failed her, though my husband will argue that whoever had her originally is the one to blame. And that is true. But every dog who enters the doors to D Kennel becomes my responsibility, right or wrong. And I take each failure as my own. And each one cracks my heart just a little bit more. I love you Mellie. And I always will.
